That was pretty much how I figured it too.

Some of the diagrams do show a databus from the ECU but none of the
wires going to the car wiring have databus-style screening.
So here's hoping the PATS is a simple connection to the ECU - if at
all.

Some forums have mentioned swapping the 3-wire fuel solenoid for a
single wire version from a non-PATS mechanical injection system.
It could be that PATS has an output directly to the three-wire unit;
if so, a swap should be straightforward.
Other PATS circuits work without ECU involvement; the ECU switches the
+12v side of the relay, PATS controls the GND side.

I'm still at about 15 unidentified wires (not had time to look over
the weekend).
About half of these go to the engine bay fuse/relay box, the rest go
straight to the ECU. Not too bad.

That 15 includes some simple ones, like tacho output, vehicle speed
for electronic speedo, ign+, start, etc.
I also haven't yet found some of the instrument warning light wires
e.g. headlamp main beam, sidelights, glowplug warning light, oil
pressure, water temp etc.

The hardest part about it is that I'm working from the wrong end i.e.
searching the wiring diagrams looking for wire colours which match
what I have in my hand.
Not easy when Ford re-use the wire colours for different things!
I probably ought to try going the other way - figure out what circuits
are needed for the engine, and then seeing if any of the wires I have
match those.

And of course it's made worse by having everything as diagrams rather
than searchable text.

Still, I'm making progress.
