Doug here,

Just happened by the forum this lunchtime so I can put in my
experience.

I don't think you can lower the engine much even if you find low
mounts, not because of the ground clearance issue, although that would
be a concern if you didn't shorten the sump as well, but because of
the clearance of the bell housing and clutch actuating arm to the
chassis crossmember underneath it, which is fairly small.

I managed to avoid a hole in my bonnet but I have an injection engine,
and use an extensively modified injection manifold, the idea for which
I got from a Robin Hood builder. My plan was also to change to a
different engine post SVA, and hence the massive effort I put in to
avoiding putting a hole in the bonnet, either for the inlet filter or
the exhaust. Sadly I have had neither the time or spare cash to
upgrade the engine, so it's been in the car for 5 years and counting,
and since I have so little time to use it or modify it further I
decided to sell the car this year.

My EeBbAaYy listing shows the underbonnet setup, but it's of little
use to you unless you can convert to injection and know a good
aluminium welder (which thankfully I do).

I don't have experience of trying to reduce the height of any carb
setups, but it seems Andrew's response has that covered.

The final option although quite pricy, is to replace the bonnet when
you replace the engine... Quantum list them at £318.

Good luck with whatever route you take!

Doug
