The reversing problem could be a problem with a driveshaft joint rather than
the gearbox.
If you do it with the bonnet open (carefully) do you see the engine/gearbox
trying to twist on it's mountings ?
If so it's probably not the gearbox.
The same IB5 gearbox was fitted to all the Mk3 Fiestas, and all the Mk5
Escorts apart from the diesels and 130ps 1.8 engines which had the bigger
MTX75 gearbox.
There were a few different ratios so i'd steer clear of the lower engine
sizes.
Do you know the age of the original donor for the 2+2 ?

Probably isn't what I need, but it's a good starting point to ask
(you) for guidance. My son's 2+2 has been upgraded to a MK3 1.8i Zetec
engine and box. The gearbox is giving some problems, it's always had a
tendency to slip out of 3rd, but recently developed a much more
serious and strange problem. When reversing, it any degree of lock
above c.50% is applied the car doesn't move and the front judders
dramatically.
This leads me to believe the best way forward is to replace the Box
(and diff) as a unit.
So the question - what kind of gearbox do I need, and what cars would
ford have fitted it to? - Plus any advice that might help an old git
who only really understands cars with rear wheel drive and
carburettors.

Though, i can't be certain that is is good (though i think it is) and if
it's the early or late gearchange (these need to match the linkage)
though i could figure it out if you need to know.
If Andy/Eddie wants it for the Mk1's then they get first refusal.
Also got several Mk2 Fiesta dash carcases to go, just the main section,
not the extra bits ATM.
