Hmm, yes, it could all be connected if a mixture of Mk2 and Mk3 parts
have been used.
I didn't think the Mk3 outer joints fitted the Mk2 hubs but it's a long
time since i think i tried.
The Mk3 inner joints do fit and are a better design compared to the
Mk2's so are worth using.
The Mk3 driveshafts are slightly longer so could be bottoming out the
inner joint when the suspension is compressed.
They aren't a lot longer, maybe 10 or 15mm but it's enough.
It would be quite difficult to measure with the inner sliding joint,
especially when they are on the car.
I think you'd need to take the joints off the shaft so you can measure
it directly.
The best check is to remove the springs and refit everthing.
You can then lift the suspension up and down over it's full travel and
make sure nothing is binding or bottoming out.

Hi Jim
bought the car with the Zetec in, that part of the problem - don't
know what's been changed and what hasn't. I've had to replace the hubs
due to bearing failures, and bought 1 "recon" unit, and lready had one
from another 2+2, these were Mk2. I've also had to change an outer CV
joint (Drivers side outer - boot had split and joint was in a bad way)
- the first CV joint supplied seemed correct, but I couldn't "draw it
in" to the hub as the threaded stud seemed too short. I got in
replaced, and was told the new one supplied was for the 1800i - I
assumed MK3?
Would I be able to measure the length of the drive shafts to check?
The front suspension has been the major failure point on the car, and
I wonder if a less than optimum solution of parts mix between the MK2
and MK3 has been used, and is causing the issues with wear and
failure?
Advice appreciated
Thanks

Did you change the driveshafts to the Mk3 ones when you fitted the Zetec ?
If so, that's probably the problem, the Mk3 shafts are longer.

Hi Jim
Had a look through the docs, and couldn't find a photo of the Mk3
Fiesta with plates - but I think it was a H reg - the original XR2
donor was a D reg. I'm fairly certain the hubs and suspension are Mk2,
and the driveshafts MK3 if this helps.

Hi Jim
I'll dig in the paperwork, I think there's a photo of the car that may
show the reg number. If I jack the car up and try the test would I be
able to see the inner ball joint moving and n ot transmiting drive to
the shaft?
Would it require resistance (in which case could I apply some breaking
force)
I never thought of it being driveshafts - don't have that problem with
rear wheel drive!
Thanks

Hi Steve,
The reversing problem could be a problem with a driveshaft joint rather
than
the gearbox.
If you do it with the bonnet open (carefully) do you see the
engine/gearbox
trying to twist on it's mountings ?
If so it's probably not the gearbox.
The same IB5 gearbox was fitted to all the Mk3 Fiestas, and all the Mk5
Escorts apart from the diesels and 130ps 1.8 engines which had the
bigger
MTX75 gearbox.
There were a few different ratios so i'd steer clear of the lower
engine
sizes.
Do you know the age of the original donor for the 2+2 ?

Hi Jim
Probably isn't what I need, but it's a good starting point to ask
(you) for guidance. My son's 2+2 has been upgraded to a MK3 1.8i
Zetec
engine and box. The gearbox is giving some problems, it's always had
a
tendency to slip out of 3rd, but recently developed a much more
serious and strange problem. When reversing, it any degree of lock
above c.50% is applied the car doesn't move and the front judders
dramatically.
This leads me to believe the best way forward is to replace the Box
(and diff) as a unit.
So the question - what kind of gearbox do I need, and what cars would
ford have fitted it to? - Plus any advice that might help an old git
who only really understands cars with rear wheel drive and
carburettors.
Cheers

I've also got a Fiesta XR2 gearbox complete with brackets, mountings
and
cradle to get rid of.
Again, anybody wanting it for a Quantum can have it FOC
Though, i can't be certain that is is good (though i think it is)
and if
it's the early or late gearchange (these need to match the linkage)
though i could figure it out if you need to know.
If Andy/Eddie wants it for the Mk1's then they get first refusal.
Also got several Mk2 Fiesta dash carcases to go, just the main
section,
not the extra bits ATM.
