This is a common problem with the starters on the CVH's, they sit behind
the exhaust manifold and get too hot.
Some cars had heatshields over the end of the starter but not all.
Getting an exchange starter may fix it but equally you may just get
another one with the same problem as i don't think it's something that's
fixed when the starters are rebuilt.
The only cure i found was to the use the later starter motor from the
Mk3 Fiesta which doesn't seem to suffer from the same problems.

Hi all,
I've had my Q for 6 months now and have had a couple of issues with it
running hot, firstly only at motorway speeds (fixed by a new
thermostat), then only in traffic (needed a new fan switch) so I've
had a fair amount of time at the side of the road waiting for things
to cool off!
What I have found is that, if the engine is hot with the needle near
the red, the starter motor will struggle a lot or sometimes fail
completely to turn the engine over, though it's possible to get going
if needed with a bump start.
If I let it cool off for a bit, it starts fine. Is this pointing to
some problem, possibly a seizure?
Thanks,
Peter
