Thanks guys for the help.

I have not noticed this recently, probably the cold weather is helping! In 
addition I found that the wire between starter motor and alternator had 
worn through at one part and was touching the metal frame, so the battery 
cannot have been delivering charge or recharging as effectively as it 
should.

I'll bear the mk3 starter in mind and/or a heat shield should I need to 
replace the current starter.
