Hi I have had a balance problem on my 2+2 and it too drove me nuts until I
realised that the wheels were centred by the studs alone and not by the
register in the middle.
Some new register sleeves (readily available cheap on the Bay) and vibration
cured.
But never had a shaft out of balance.

Well, I took it on as someone else's unfinished project which had not been
on the road with the current engine before and sat around for a few years.
For this phase its mainly bodywork. The idea is to glass in the old sunroof
to solid again, new front with round driving lights and led lights, internal
roof strengthening, bonnet work to suit the engine and a little sympathetic
rear treatment. Then glass out full respray in Apache Bronze, replace with
new glass front and rear. I will finish the interior trim myself. It's
already got the 2 litre CVH with aftermarket ECU and rolling road set up,
uprated brakes, lowered and renewed suspension plus large HiFi, central
locking and immobiliser and some recent interior re-trimming. It's now a
reliable car (which took some time), so I am making it better and more
comfortable. I am not sure a kit car is ever finished, but then it should
be close!

Hi Jim,
I think your last comment has got it. The loose gaiter flopped around
being more out of balance but both gaiters secure they still move more
each rotation compared to the other side. You cannot see any bend in the
shaft at low revs so I will go with the joint(s) on that side.
In the meantime I have just managed to balance the vibration out with a
bit of science and a bit of luck. Totally gone now. And that is with the
weight attached at the inboard end of the shaft. So supporting the idea
it's not the hub or wheel. I think it's time for a new driveshaft. Last
one I did was a few years ago but I recall it was not a bad job, just
heavy. Just a case of finding a replacement. But that will come later.
The Coupe is going to be Eddie-ized at the weekend. Hopefully it will be
Super-Coupe in a months time! Onwards and upwards for the quality of the
car. (and the bills)
Cheers

It could be either the driveshaft is bent, or it could be wear in the

Do you get much backlash in the joints if you hold one half and try to
turn the other half ?
I'm not sure if the MOT would say anything but I'd still be worried as to
why it would need balancing, the only reason i can think of is it's bent.
Can you borrow a dial gauge to put up against the centre of the shaft and
turn the wheel by hand.
I'm quite surprised that the loose gaiter clip would change the
vibration, I'm sure they are small enough mass that they wouldn't cause
it in themselves but maybe the more secure gaiter is damping some of the
vibration, maybe from a worn joint.

Thanks all, much appreciated.
The problem has been there in varying degrees since I have had the coupe.
It is the usual 65mph resonance. Sometimes it seemed to be very little,
other times significant, but never gone. But it has not been the
priority issue. I am now going though the process of diagnosing the
problem and have had the wheels very closely balanced and tried changing
them around, check tightened all suspension bolts, serviced the brakes
and finally had a brainwave. At one point I found the outer offside
(long) shaft ball joint gaiter clip undone. Securing it again reduced
the vibs.
I put the car on a solid chassis ramp and ran it up. Looking at the
rotating components that shaft is the only one looks as if it is
vibrating. (i.e. has a fuzzy outline with 65mph on the speedo, more solid
when lower speed and no vibs. felt) But the offside wheel is responding.
(changing the wheel made no difference - unless there are two wheels that
balance fine, but don't run true on the hub!) Nearside looks solid and
the wheel and tyre solid, too. Then tried it without wheels at all.
There is still a buzz when the wheels are removed but obviously not the
same vibration. Hence the idea to try a DIY balance of the shaft.
So if I succeeded is there a possibility I would have problems with MOT
or not in your opinion?
I suppose wheel balancing on the car might still solve it even if it is
the drive shaft. But it would not be the best solution. If I can
balance shaft that would prove the problems source and I might still
change the shaft. Or maybe it is the gearbox output Jim (!)

Checked everything and had the wheels balanced off the car - couldn't
solve the problem.
Ended up having finding a garage that could balance the wheels in situ
(on the car).
That solved the problem.

I have to admit to having changed a gearbox on a car to fix a vibration
which turned out to be the front tyres........

Agree with Jim. Not sure what points to the drive shaft, but the other
potential one, which I've had problems with in the past is tyre faults.
Try
switching wheels front to back, one at a time.
