Having once locked my keys in the boot five minutes before a client meeting and had to burgle the car with an unwound coat hanger, this was one scenario I dreaded as it sounds as if the rod that connects the lock to the catch has come detached. I assume from your description that you do not have electrical actuation. I no longer have my H4 but if you can contact someone who has and get them to give you accurate drawings/photos of where the actuating lever and connecting rod sit relative to the outside of the boot. I photographed most things during the build but for some reason not the boot lid. The least intrusion would be one 2mm hole, a long electrical screwdriver and considerable patience whilst you fish for the actuating lever might just work. The other option would be to remove the number plate and make a larger hole through which you could operate with greater ease. The boot lid is double skinned in that area and the mechanism sits in the cavity. Good luck!
