Thanks for the extra picture, it makes sense now.
An unusual setup but i guess that was down to the original Rover seats.

If you’d not cut the brackets off the front of the Mk2 runners (which i think
you have) then i’d say get rid of all those brackets, fit the Mk2 runners
directly to the hump and fill the existing holes in with Silicone or fibreglass
filler.

But, otherwise, what you suggest should work, though, those brackets look a bit
flexible.

It does also depend on how high you need the seats.
I initially bolted the runners directly to the floor in my saloon but soon
realised i did need the spacing tubes.
In the 2+2 the Recaro runners are directly on the hump and it’s fine.

Cheers Jim

The way the seat was mounted; 4 x L brackets into the floor, one for each
corner of the runners, sat widthways. The photo attached shows the rear two
mount points with the seat folded forward

What I'm thinking of doing is cutting off 1/3 of the bottom bracket, rotating
them around 90 degrees so that there's more length over the 'hump' which my fag
packet calculations say there should now be enough length to get the runners on

As the actress said to the bishop, my hump has never been drilled.

Open to other options though, I basically have 4 holes in the floor, a set of
runners and no legs :)

When you say they are too short do you mean in height or length ?

Normally on the 2+2 the front fixings are on the vertical face of the “hump”
in the floor using the existing brackets on the front of the Mk2 runners.
The runners sit directly on top of the “hump” and the rear of the runner is
bolted through the rear of the hump using the holes where the rear brackets
were attached.
If the seat is too low then it may have been fitted with some spacers or a
square steel tube between the hump and the runners.

If i’m understanding it right the brackets in your picture are mounted on the
flat section of the floor next to the hump ?
Are there 2 or 4 per seat ?

On the saloon the floor is lower so all the brackets are removed from the
runners and they are bolted to some square steel tube which in turn is bolted
to the floor.

Update to this one, the runners are too short! The way the seats are mounted
is on a pair of L brackets, photo attached. These brackets act in place of the
legs that would normally be on the runners. They're drilled right next to the
'hump' that the seat floor would just scrape

What I'm thinking of doing is cutting the bottom ones down by one hole so I
can get the smaller length I need to mount the runners, that would give me 2
holes on the bottom and 3 at the top. Is that a really bad idea or will I be
OK?

The ones that come off are mounted into the seat so cant be re-used (Rover
seats, per this thread from ages ago

Once you remove the brackets the Mk2 and Mk3 runners are pretty much the
same.

Don’t forget to use big (at least 2” dia) and thick (2mm) washers under the
floor on the bolts.
An ordinary sized washer could pull through the floor in an accident.

    Hiya

Dug out my build manual - not much info, but it states as follows :-

6.15.7 Front Seats. Remove the rear mounting lugs from the bottom of the
seat runners by drilling out the rivets. Bolt the seat to the floor. The
carpet should be cut around the runners. The correct location for the fixing
bolts has been scribed on the underside of the car floor. It is essential that
the seat runners are parallel otherwise they will not slide freely.

The manual make no reference to Mk3.5, so I guess it is the standard Mk2
runners that are used.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards
