Hi Martin
Unfortunately I'm elsewhere this weekend, which is a pity as My Q's looking
good (clay / machine polish / hand polish / seal / wax :) ) and I'd like to
have been at the show anyway.
A good way to be sure your clearances are optimised for extremes of one side /
both sides bump and droop would be to temporarily remove the rear springs and
disconnect the arb.
 Best regards

Thanks Bill, some great work there and far beyond my capabilities and
equipment. I'll do some measurements and calcs. One thing I may do (to avoid
re-doing the GRP on the boot floor) is move the bolt hole in the PRod bracket
by just ovalising it and welding to the edge and/ or (maybe better) Just
welding a thick washer on both sides in the correct position to move the
mounting hole 7.5mm (ie get it central). I may still put some gaffer tape
around the LH plastic cover to try to ascertain clearance prior to doing
this....... It may be better to just move ,say, 5mm to give a little more
clearance to the LHS to allow for PRod movement. Are you making the (long) trip
down to Stoneleigh?Martin

  Martin
If you do trig calculations you will see that the axle doesn't move all that
much horizontally from bump to droop. You should be fine with the axle centred
when the panhard rod is horizontal. I found that with 7" wheels with only just
enough offset, the limiting feature was the inside of the tyre touching the
inner wing near the top (actually the heads of the rear seat hinge bolts). You
might find near the bottom of this page interesting.

The panhard rod mount was drilled (accurately) in the position marked by
Quantum. I've not removed it (yet) to examine for ovalisation, but certainly
the holes could be treated as you suggest, and this will avoid purchasing an
adjustable panhard rod. I'm not averse to purchasing one, but If an adjustable
one is larger diameter than standard this is likely to give clearance issues
with the towbar. As the PR is horizontal at the resting ride height and is
bolted to the RH side of the bodyshell, any movement of the axle up or down
will tend to pull the body towards the left and thus make more clearance for
the tyre on the RH side (I appreciate this is a simplied scenario). Measured as
5mm clearance between tyre and trailing arm for RH tyre, and 20mm clearance for
LH tyre, If I move the PR to put the clearance equal I supect I'd then get
clearance issues on the LH side. The advantage of an adjustable PR is there if
I go that route. Ideally I really need spacers or different offset wheels!
Thanks for info. Martin

  Hi Martin
If the panhard rod is not bent then unequal n/s and o/d clearances can only be
due to grossly perished panhard rod bushes (very unlikely) or the car has been
driven with the panhard rod mount not securely bolted to the boot floor thereby
elongating the holes in the floor, or inaccurate drilling of the boot floor. I
suggest you undo the mount then with the rear of the car at normal ride height
re-drill or elongate the holes as necessary. When you bolt it back up use body
filler to remove the resulting gaps. When the filler has set, unbolt the mount
and reattach it with windscreen or body adhesive. You then shouldn't need
spacers but for info most insurance companies are ok with thin (3 or 4mm)
spacers if required.    Best regards
Bill

Subject: [Quantum Owners] Fatter tyres??

I'm hoping someone can shed some light........ Giving the Q saloon a
once-over prior to Stoneleigh, and I noticed the rear offside tyre has scraped
the plastic sleeve on the damper. I didn't have the problem with the previous
tyres which were the same size (185/55x14) The wheels are as before (43.5
inset). I can only think the tyre shape (Dunlop) is a bit different to the
previous tyres (Firestone) - the new ones do measure 185mm across. I've also
tried switching wheels to different corners just n case of some crazy offset
difference in manufacture.  Measuring the clearance to the rear trailing arms
is 5mm on the offside and 20mm on the nearside, so far from ideal. The only
ways I can see of changing this are 1) different tyres, but a lottery as to
result.  2) spacers (I have an aversion to them, as do insurance. 3) change the
wheels (maybe Peugeot for less inset?) or 4) Fit an adjustable panhard rod to
attempt to "even it up" which may give a problem on the nearside.  As far as I
can see it the close clearance in itself is an issue, not helped by the poor
design (panhard rod) which moves the axle laterally when the suspension
compresses. With the car on level ground the panhard rod is horizontal, so any
movement (up or down) will have the effect of moving the axle/RH wheel to the
offside of the car, thus improving the current situation, but clearly bush
compliance/stack up of movement has caused the tyre to touch the plastic
shield. Has anyone else got a clearance issue on rear tyres on a saloon?  --
