In fact, just using the default QC project template in XCode and turning on Enable Guard Malloc will cause the very same crash.
I'm reliably able to reproduce this on 10.6.2, but not 10.5.8 (I believe you've already stated this -- just adding another datapoint) -- Guard Malloc on 10.5.8 makes it take forever to start, but it does run eventually :)
