I believe it's one of those features where many people simply don't
comment a lot about.

It's kind of interesting because this was one of the most heavily
debated items during the beta test phase of iPeng 1.2, while some people
actually requested that feature others opposed it heavily and suggested
it not to become the default.
It now _is_ the default and I really did not have a _single_ question
about that, and I do get quite a lot of usability questions, especially
for things that are not explained in the tutorial animations (this one
isn't).

So my impression is that it actually fits quite well with what most
people expect the main volume control to do for synced players.
