1.  There was no sound because I had plugged in a wire to the input.  It
assumed that I was going to input from the rear whereas I assumed that I
could select the input.  Dumb, perhaps, but other devices I own let me
keep an input device plugged in...  Even my little clock radio.

2.  I had to remove the battery in order to get the unit working
properly vis a vis wifi and being able to toggle between my squeezebox
for FM and then my Mac for my music.   So the battery is part of the
confusion here.  Why would a battery screw this up?

Tip of the day:  one of the wiki's on this subject says that the
battery does not charge when the radio is turned off.   Read that again
carefully:  When the radio is plugged in but not turned on, the battery
does not charge.  WTF?!  

Squeezebox is like a woman that is alternately amazing and then
exasperating.
