I asked the same question in a different thread
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?97242-Updating-Squeezebox-Radio-to-Smart-Radio&p=725422&viewfull=1#post725422)
and Erland correctly pointed out that manually loading the Squeezebox
Radio firmware into Smart Radio hardware might conceivably stop the
Smart Radio booting up. However, I wonder if this "<< + power up"
feature might give some protection against this. Does this same
procedure work on Smart Radio hardware, so that if the Squeezebox Radio
firmware totally broke the Smart Radio it could still be restarted with
the previously working Smart Radio firmware?

It's going to need someone with more disposable income than me to test
this :)
