Consider these facts:
1. A campout is planned by a Ranger leader.
2. Ranger equipment is used on the campout.
3. The boys attending are Rangers.
4. The campout is NOT listed on the church calendar.
Bummer.
5. There is NO communication to the parents that this is a Ranger campout.
Double Bummer.
Questions:
1. Is this a ranger campout?
Yes, but the Commander should receive a serious reprimand!
Some church insurance will NOT cover 'ad hoc' events like this.
2. Should the requirements of a ranger campout(permission slips, medical release forms, two leaders present, etc.) be applied to this campout?
YES. No question about it, no doubt about it. Courage is one thing, foolhardiness
is another thing entirely and shouldn't be tolerated.
3. If there was an accident, injury, or incident on this campout - could Rangers or the church be held liable?
YES. Starting with the leader in question and moving up the chain of command,
liability and the 'deep pocket' rule will reign, unless there is specific church
policy that disavows responsibility for unsanctioned events.
