After reading the subject line.... which caught my attention... I began to
think about such issues within the church today.

Keep in mind John, that culture plays a big part of Biblical history. That
is not to say that it's invalid, just because it's history; but there are
obvious passages that, though fully inspired, can be taken out of context
when standing alone.

There are many single verses in the Bible upon which the numerous doctrines
and faiths have been founded as 'gospel', but when taken out of context,
they take on a whole new meaning other than that for which they were
included in scripture.

Some denominations hold different scriptures higher than others. I grew up
in the UPC. As you mentioned, the UPC tends to take personal appearance to
a higher level that some feel that it should be.... no makeup, women don't
cut their hair, men must be clean shaven (which always amused me, since
Jesus had a beard).... some even lean way to close to cultism for my taste.

Some worship the 5 letters of Jesus Name, versus the savior whom those 5
letters represent.... using stand alone, out of context scriptures to back
them up.

I've been in services where ladies by the door stapled paper around girls
dresses on their way in, in order to make them 'proper' ladies... with no
leg showing.

Most of these practices have some scripture to 'back the up' as Biblical
Practices... though... fully out of context of the intent and message of the
chapter in which they reside.

UPC itself isn't the only one that does this... I only use them as an
example, since you mentioned them.

You'll find that many denominations that are so legalistic tend to think
they are the only ones who have the truth... thus, the birth of UPC.

For any of you who have studied the history of the Assemblies of God, you'll
know that the UPC is a break off of the A/G. The mere exploitation of one
verse in the Bible became a "new revalation" which caused a split early in
the A/G's birth.

Now there are many splinters that have taken a 'not so legalistic' stand and
have broken off of the UPC (i.e., Apostolic, etc.)

I myself am credentialed through one of those organizations, yet I am also a
die hard Assemblies of God boy. :-)

There are some in both camps (A/G and Oneness) who feel I must choose a
'side'... for those, I pray. I am on the Lord's side... whether you call
him Master, Savior, Jesus, Father, etc. One Savior, One Lord.

"Come to me, all who are thirsty and are heavy laden, and I will give you
rest"
"Call upon the name of the Lord and you'll be saved"

NOT

"Come to me all who are thirsty and are heavey laden and i'll learn you to
dress proper"

NOT

"Call upon the name of the Lord and you'll be saved... but only if you get
baptized in Jesus name and speak in touges with the Holy Ghost first..."

"Study to show thyself approved, a workman that needeth not be ashamed...
RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD OF TRUTH"

Selah,

Andy.
