In 1840 you didn't have the problem we have in 1999 in finding 100% cotton
to make char from... the color isn't the problem the content of polyester
or flame retardent might be...

OK.. I figger mayby yur hole was TOO BIG and let Oxygen in...
The idea is that this cloth with burn but the lack of air will
in essence turn the cloth into "charcoal" the way that wood "starved"
in a fire will do the same.

  The charred cloth appears to be

Smoke leftovers... you want to try it again with the smallest hole you can
punch (*Tip of a small finnish nail) and find a tiny plug to cram in after
you pull it from the fire. (*whittle a plug from wood)
