Let me explain to you how this is done in our outpost in Mtzingen/Germany:
Yes, our Pfadrangers (ages 15 to 17) are doing "extreme sports". But this is
not their main activity.
We are having a weekly meeting just like in all the other age groups. And
all of our Pfadrangers are also members of our church's youth group
(Pfadranger-meeting is on wednesday and youth group meets on saturdays).
The german Pfadranger-program was recently reformed. Now there is only one
achievement left, that a Pfadranger could earn: the "Scout". For this
achievement you have to:
- visit a JLTC (Junior Leader's Trainingscamp) and a JLTT (Junior Leader's
Trainings Trail)
- earn the "golden Lily" of Pfadfinder (ages 12 to 14) which is the highest
Pfadfinder-achievement you can earn in Germany
- take part in at least two different RIDEs (abbreviation for "Ranger at
Service Engagment"). There are three kinds of RIDEs: local RIDEs (L-RIDE),
national RIDEs (N-RIDE) like arrangeing a campout for the kids of prisoners
and international RIDEs (A-RIDE) which means missionary or humanitary work
in an other country (normally states of the former Warszaw pact). Completing
an RIDE does not only mean taking part in it but also having at least 30
hours of preparation for it.
- work out a documentation about one of these RIDEs
- work out information about another Scouting Organisation and giving a
report on it
- do a work project and set it up for a patrol
- take part in a 4-days tour by bike, canoe, ski or foot and sleeping in
bivouacs
- serve your church for one year, attended by a commander
- do at least 3 devotions worked out literally
- earn two more (special) achievements
I hope you can see that our Pfadrangers are not mainly doing "extreme
sports". This is what they are doing instead of campouts or as lets say
quarterly action.
In difference to all other age groups Pfadrangers are setting up their
program for themselves or take at least a huge part in the organisation of
their meeting, their tours, their campouts etc.
Many of the german Pfadrangers do also serve as Junior Leaders in other age
groups (mainly Starter (ages 7 to 8) and Kundschafter (ages 9 to 11)). The
age group of Pfadrangers is the one in which Rangers are trained to become
Leaders.
I don't know how far this is similar to what is building up in US-Rangers,
but I hope it helps.
