I'm new to Rangernet, and is this allways the
way individuals are treated? I was responding
to a proposal for running a pinewood derby
up-hill, indicating boredom with the normal
way one is run.

Some of the first messages I recieved was of
a Commander wanting to earn a boys award.

When I first heard of comming changes,
I was hesitant to beleve that something
that has worked so well for so long needed a
re-fit, however perhaps it is time for change
in the ranks.

I'll try to respond to you Cdr.Jones and you may
forward my comments to others as you see fit.

We "used" to promote Pinewood for everyone and
found that the younger boys brought parents into
the Outpost fellowship. We allways hold the race
on a separate night from the meeting.

This is welcome.

The "Older boys" had ran Pinewood so many times that
they did not bother to build new cars, in spite
of the requirements to purchase a kit.
When I detected the lagging interestin playing
by the rules, I felt it was a violation of the
Ranger code. I acted in the best interest of
the Outpost and the church.

About the same time I spoke with our Youth Pastor
and he desired to better embrace the transition of
our Royal Rangers into the Youth. I agreed.

I spoke to our Commanders and expressed the hope
that more of the older Pioneers would begin solid
progress on the GMA award, but for those who did
not make that choice, we should not hold them back
from moving on to the youth dept.

Our church has decided to invest in the combined
youth meeting for Jr.High to be held on the wed.
family night. I agree.

Those boys who desire to continue in Rangers
must join the trailblazer/trailranger OP that
meets Sun. afternoon for an "activity event"
and proceed at their pace in the Gold track.

I see that extending the "cub scout" activities
might be valid, for some..but have found by
experience that a separate meeting time, and
outdoor based older boy group allows boys the
options of youth and Rangers and invites thier
youth buddies into a "age appropriate" activity
without the sigma of a "little boy club".

I as Sr.Commander over-see the Pinewood derby
and have the leaders of the Straight Arrows and
Buckaroo/Pioneers run the event as they see fit.
It has become a major fundraiser for them, from
snacks ect. being sold.

We do not invite Missionets or allow Adults to
race against the boys. These are just cans of worms
waiting to be opened, and a hinderence to the health
and welfare of our Outpost.

My Pastor backs me because I respect the over-all
outreach of the church over any blind promotion
of a single program. The Older boy program is
admittedly small, but it is quality based and
active.
