Hebrews 3:12-14

Take care, brothers! ,lest there be any of you with an evil unbelieving
heart leading
you to fall away from the living God.

Exhort one another everyday, as long as it is called "today", that none
of you may be
hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

For we share in Christ... if only we hold our first confidence firm to
the end.

(*Oxford Bible rsv)

Let's begin to implement a patrol based Royal Ranger Outpost...

I say let the Ranger Code be our "law" and the Ranger pledge our "oath"
let the motto reflect our "goal" and our Emblem hold our core values....

TO REACH~

Let every boy come as he is to a Ranger Outpost and be welcomed to join.

In joining however.. he must come to understand our purpose and goals
and agree to how we run the Outpost.

1. Jesus is Lord- and we are a "safe Harbor"

2. We are "brothers" and bound by our father in heaven to "make the
Golden Rule
    our daily rule"
3. We have a future that requires effort, learning to "learn" will pay
out in a full life of
exploration into what God has prepared for you.

4. Royal Rangers is a "game" that can be played you whole life. As we
learn to play "the game" we will find great foundational items to add to
our life. these items are VALUABLE and so we treat "game players" with
respect due to anyone who
wants a truely better life and to be in tune with our "Master Ranger"

Nuts and Bolts-----
-----------------

To be a success watch what successfull people and orginizations do- and
do that!

Find a resource you trust... Ranger or Scout or Small group
orginization. Attend NTC or Woodbadge
or research for Leadership skills in non-profit orginizations,
auxilleries, fraternal organizations, parent teacher groups,
social service agencies or service clubs... (*Big task )

My point is this: A Good Teacher is belevible. becomeing "beleveible"
involves believeing what you teach.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------

*Do that then come back and... Report!<G>

(More to come!)
-=A=- out!

*Comment: In believing the Patrol system is desirable, don't fail to
discouragement
or comparing success with other groups. Just continue to believe.

>

> Exhort one another everyday, as long as it is called "today", that none

*Every meeting should be a reminder of the importance of the Patrol and the
boy leaders
of the outpost. Many teachable moments come when these young men work with
each other..
They are the future... We represent the past. Our job is to build a bridge to
understanding
the nature of God and his wonderment in our lives..

.

To TEACH----

The Patrol System needs a few Royal Ranger attitude adjustments to become
real...

Each boy needs a job or needs to become busy advancing to the level where he
can be used in a job in the
outpost.
The job of encouragement is everybody's! The Bible instructs us to care and
"prefer our brother" and that
means
Rangers must look outside of their "self" and help others advance.

The Patrol system is not a top-down order machine... the patrol system is the
way things get done!
The Patrol leader is not an Order giver... but a hand up over an obstacle, a
resource the new recruit uses to
get up to speed... In any group you need "crowd Control"... thus you have
formations and ways to call attention

to the moment of "what is happening" *Attention means just that!

*Something is about to happen<G> you want to be part of it so... Listen!
Watch! Yield your spirit! Think!

The Patrol is where you "work out" who you are and what you should or should
not be doing...
The Outpost formation is a "simi-formal" assembly where things of interest to
all patrols can be
displayed at one time. *But it's NOT the main thing.. that is important<G>

*Properly using the CHAIN OF COMMAND
-------------------------------------------------

What Royal Ranger rules the Outpost?

Senior Guide!---

Have him establish his "RULE"

(Back him.. council him..train him..enourage him and win him over to the
Patrol System!)
In starting out choose patrols like you choose teams for a softball game. and
then have them pick a boy best
suited to answering questions for the "patrol"

That's Patrol GUIDE!-"the toughest job in the Outpost!"

*Now Commander sit's down and slides writen requests to Sr.Guide to announce
the agenda items of the "meeting"
Lt.Cdr's "hover over" but do not interfere with the Patrols.. they listen, so
that Commander can get a
"feedback"
in adult words of the needs of the new Patrol's and leaders..

*Cover everything with PRAYER! and lots of handouts! Use Video.. Use
Slides..Use overheads!
Do everything in your power to compell the boys to join in playing this
"Game"...

More to come.. LUNCH!
-=A=- out!

I assume <G> you've implemented ONE successful patrol led meeting..
You've done your best... and exhausted every Ranger resource<G>

The patrols have worked to design a flag and come up with a cheer and a
snappy name.

NOW WHAT?
--------------

WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD------
(Old Tire ad indicating "making the main thing the main thing!")

You need to keep the ball rolling!

It's my opinion that Royal Rangers is flawed in having two groups in the

khaki uniform. And before you throw tomahawks... let me explain!

Young boys can be lead by older boys...and making the older boy a
"hero"
and backing his authority to lead, requires great virtues to be placed
on the older boy
which transmits better to the younger boy<G> Both gain...both become
trained..
and you perpetuate the Patrol..

If we all best "learn by doing.." then *Doing the patrol System is
hands-on training for
working as a team on a project or task. Later in life we have
supervisors, lead men,
captains ect. who are "mid-management"

When we promote our top Pioneers to become "bottom" Trailblazers we
loose the
momentum in building the Patrols...and boy leadership..

I perceive that Pioneers can lead the patrol of like aged boys and the
older Trailblazer
boy needs a "staff" role as he prepares to earn the GMA.. spliting them
at 12 wounds
the overall wholeness of the older boy program, requires too many men
who often
send conflicting signals on leadership, and sometimes stiffles the
advancement of the boy to the GMA.

(*I'd like to see one clear understandible advancement program with zero
repetitive
advancement requirement leading to the GMA)

(*Secure opinion- charge it to the wind and let the dust settle it<g>)

There is a break in the relationship of the "Officer Ranks" the "Deans
and Presidents"
the "CEO's" who use the delegation of authority to manage the task.

Applying this to the Outpost.. the Camp-out...

"many hands makes the task light" Adult leaders should *Plan ahead for
successful events to "challenge" the new fragile patrols system.. this
means planning successful campouts, trips and hikes.

I'm going to secure now for a time to get some feedback... and note this
is a particular
privilege of conversation here on RANGERNET<G>

Lay it on me<G>

*The silence I hear speaks loudly<G>

Let's assume the .new program desires to implement the Patrol system
following
changes to the structure of .Royal Rangers... ARE WE READY?

How would we do it?
---------------------
..
*Makeing the patrol system work requires everyone to confront the core
attitudes in place in the Outpost.

Control vs. Co-Operation...

Is the goal of leadership to have the boys stand at attention and listen
politely to
lectures from Commander? Is his wisdom superior, his insight important
enough
to fill meeting after meeting?

To accomplish that... Order everyone to be silent.. no talking... no
looking around..

Teach Jr. leaders to bark and demand respect because they have
"authority" and
"blow up" every time a boy refuses to yield or co-operate.

...under this form of organization, the boys come and are rewarded for
their yielding
to a "Big Boss" who issues decrees in a top down form of
communication... Independent
thinkers, confused boys and super Rangers get their "noses bent" and
begin to resent attending a "boring"
meeting, without being used or involved.. they stop advancing and quit.

Royal Ranger *burn-out!

It goes like this:

One Leader- "with something important to say"

..and everyone there is in the dark. a struggle begins as the Leader
speaks looking at
empty eyes, the back row fidgets and the mini conversations start to dis
rupt the group.

Leader sees this and in mid sentence stops to bark "HEY! LISTEN- UP!"

The "Meeting turns into a struggle for power to CONTROL"

Paramilitary model
-------------------

This is where Orders are strictly issued and failure brings negative
treatment..
Loss of game time, tong lashing, criticism, threats, or physical abuse.

Long periods of standing at attention build the feeling that the LEADER
is the only
important member of the Outpost.

Question...

How can a boy become trained or elevated to leadership...True
Leadership?

It seems the "goal" is to find the boys ALERT and ready to participate,
to be eager to achieve..
and the overriding spirit of the Perfect outpost is Co-Operation<G>

Look at how groups of cooperating people treat each other and you will
find basic RESPECT!

*Leadership needs to become a "ball that we toss back and forth"....

I propose that you "Toss the ball" to Sr.Guide and stand READY to
"catch" and then "TOSS IT"
to another<G> This process of momentary "impowerment" builds confidence
in the boys to stand and
present their feelings and ideas before the "group" and they will LIKE
THE FEELING!

*Let's kill the "I'm the boss you listen or I'll box yur ears..."

Change to a relaxed mode where you "work with the boys, to become
Leaders" by action and then *reflection..

Reflection...
-----------

Good communication come from understanding where everyone is at
mentaly,physicaly,spiritualy and socialy.

Sharing the "good stuff" is what making the main thing-the main thing is
about!
Have the patrols discuss what worked in each exercise... and what
didn't<G>

Ask "reflective questions" and get the boys to speak out about
describing THEIR OUTPOST!

Set up Camp outs where the main agenda is to build teamwork..

OK Rangernet patrol...

What's yur Ideas! <G>

Great Feedback<G>

Build a "Power Vacume"

*This don't mean a device to sweep up dirt balls<G> But rather...

Blow away the cobwebs and try something RADICAL!

Your boys are trained, advanced and ready to become leaders...
You and your adult staff agree on implimenting "boy leadership"

"Create a event where the olderboys set up "stations" to teach younger
boys the advancement skills needed to succeed as pioneers ect."

Make this happen as effectively as possible with forms to fill out and
handouts to 'refer too.. and lines to stand in<G> Make this an
"advancement skills day"

...and the adults will not participate!
(*just stand and watch to preserve peace)

If Commander is allways there... How many boys will step forward to
lead?
*Would you?

I think I'm about to understand something<G>

I'm a GREAT Commander.. I know how to strut!

I should have become a great silent "commander"

Thanks!

The "game"...

"when we all get togather-togather-togather...
when we all get togather how happy we'll be"

The Royal Ranger meeting is a "game board"

Every Ranger is a "player" and has predictible "moves" (*job
assignments)
and one of the "games" called the "Chain of Command"

*It just would not be right for One player to "do everything"

If every "player" is a piece of the "Game" then the task is to "do
something"
and use as many "Pieces" as possible while every player is "alert" to
the rules of the game..

One of the "games" might be Opening Cerimony... another might be:
"Patrols! prepare for uniform inspection and reports"

Later in "the game" you find "closeing cerimony" "devotion time"
"craft-feature"

*Mayby... the game is to have Adults be the "commercials" or
"advertisements"<G>

Thanks..

What does the boy want that comes to your OP meeting?

*If he opens a handbook, looks at the pictures... reads the opening
material...

Is he pleased with your Op? does it sound and act like he expected?

At the heart of a Patrol based group of boy leaders, is a foundation of
fairness and access to many "leaders" *a boy often does not know how to
act or get along..

Mayby in his patrol... in the quiet of a camp he can find a friend and
trust another,
and respect a Royal Ranger achiever.

*Our Job as Adults is to be "aware" and ALERT to the health of the
Outpost.
Be READY in an instand to act right and back our boy leaders when they
are right..
and council them when they fall short.

Many of us wear the LMA on our chest..

Organization- "make the OP a safe harbor"
Councilor-"Ready to minister"
Co-Ordination-"Give away the good stuff"
Camping-"Play the game"
Communication-"Reflection"

*What would happen if we did our jobs?

The patrol method
------------------
Boy Leadership

"a Commanders job is to train and equip boys to run *their* Outpost"

**********************************************************************
*COMMANDERS ARE EXPENDIBLE Boys are not...If *You* Commander are doing
it all.... That's not Royal Rangers,...consider getting out of the way.

*paraprased by ->A No.1<-
(Sonny Green, FCF V.P. summer 1996)
************************************************************************

 Why the Patrol Method?
-----------------------

Pastors stand at the pulpet and preach! ...Glory!
Teachers stand at the chalkboard and teach!
Coaches stand at the head of a formation and yell!
Drill sargents, tear you down to build you back up!

What do boys do?

"they form gangs..it's a boys natural way of order..

Take a large group of boys..let them mingle, and smaller groups begin
to form. These groups form friendships, and honor,loyality...they stick
to each other in work and play.

Now, take that *Gang and call it a Patrol!

(Tip!) It's 1997 and more and more our Rangers are solo adventurers...
The TV and Computer/Nintendo steals old fashioned stick-ball and hoop
from the lives of our boys.

Commander! get them to make friendships...an outing devoted to knowing
each other..what each does for fun and intrest will ease the formation of
the partol "Gang" Commander needs desernment in makeing sure that
"clickks"sp?
do not form, and Commander may bust up a "gang" to serve the Outpost goal..

That's adult leadership!

Nut's and Bolts.."How too!"
_________________________

Boys learn by doing...so get them doing something!
Your aim is to teach leadership thru experiance..so here goes!

"Trust 'em to do right...Hand over "Adventures in Camping"
to Sr.Guide in a Gold Bar Staff meeting and say..

"Sr.Guide You may appoint a patrol,or teach yourself to the outpost...
(Example..) *what to take on an over-night camp out*
I do not care what you say (Follow Ranger Code!) or how you say it...but get
the knoledge accross to 'em..
We have an Outdoor Camp-out planed for 2 weeks.. Thanks, Sr.Guide!"

Then step back...(It is HARD the first time!...DO IT!)

(Tip!)
If Sr.Guide wants the job....he'll handle it, or it's time to put in a
new man! Boy leadership...means Leadership!

(aside)
Letting the BOYS run the outpost is a freeing experiance...
You do not have to tell each ranger what to do and when to do it..
You don't have to worry about next weeks meeting feature, Sr.Guide has
planned it, along with the patrol guides...

You Commander, can have time to think of new ideas, to keep the outpost
on track for powwow or nat'l camporama! and..above all, you have time
to do your Spirtual Job...to council, mentor, guide a ranger to a deeper
walk with the Lord...

*Re-View!
*********

For the Perfect outpost...the patrol method is an absolute necessety!
*think about NTC...*

Form patrols of 5 to 8 max.

Train them under the guidence of their own responsible leader
as separate units/patrols....

Remember...Go for Broke! do not give up on this concept, convince yourself,
pastor and whoever else..that this way will work! IT WILL!

haveing established the Patrol Method..uyse it for everything!

Thanks....May God bless each Outpost!

More to come...

Royal Rangers come in all shapes, sizes and personal make-up and abilities.
They are tall, short, thin and fat...clean and soiled, immature and
experianced, sharp and dull- timid and bold, athletic and uncoordinated
couch patato's!

*And then there are the boys! Heheeee! (*Mercy, forgive me please!<G>)

Boys are very different from one another, yet they have many common
traits. They cannot stand injustice, favoritisum, sarcasum and
insincerity. Most of them crave action... and all desire "FUN!"

*They like to do things, but are impatient about how to do them.<g>

While boys want to be them selves, they hesitate to be different
because they prefere acceptence by the majority and beleve this acceptence
comes to them thru conformity.

This forms a great paradox, in that their are many differences in
individual boys and yet a great simularity in all boys!

As a leader of a Ranger Outpost, you should be concerned with both sides
of this paradox. You must work with the tools given by the great common
ground,of the desires of the boys, and yet reach out to *minister individualy
to
the real needs of boys...

You cannot however, be ALL things to all boys!

 You cannot take the place
of the greater church, the home, parents and the school. It is'nt our
function to solve their more complex problems. We should recognize them
tho, and point the way.. to steer the boy to those more able to help,
guide and council the boy as needed.. *and we can Pray!

To become effective with the boys, you need to really like them. This
can be shown by being interested in them and showing them respect..
in haveing patience with them and giveing encouragement and enthusiasum,
...and takeing time to *Listen!

Patience is shown by hear'n out a breathless adventure from a Pioneer,
when you have "more important things to do"....

It's holding back a quick word of criticizum, when you detect a failure
untill you can suggest a more positive way to make the situation right..

Patience also comes from "knowing" that boys learn a great deal from
failures, and trial and error... and sometimes you have to let go...

*WHAT DO THE BOY WANT FROM A "COMMANDER?"
-----------------------------------------
*TRY THESE ON TO SEE IF THE "SHOE FITS"

*Can you control or supervise without loseing your temper and spoiling the
"fun?"

*Can you disagree without being disagreeable?

*Do you have a sence of humor? Can you take a joke in a good natured way?

*Can the boys depend on your word, even in the smallest things?

*Are you fair?

*Do you respect them-accept them- even tho you hold a "higher standard"
for them to attain?

*Can you freely hand out praise without the use of the word: "But..."
(That's great, *BUT next time do better..)

*Do you really like Ranger boys?
How would the boys rate you if they could judge your leadership?

*It's of some comfort to know that Boys... are far more generious than men
in judgeing leadership. They know real quick how hard it is to lead.. and
appreciate your good work. *They may not allways say so.. but down inside,
you will allways live in their memories!

...and in our memories, to our hearts will allways be,
Royal Rangers sure to shine, all of the time!

*With God's help.. Do your best!

The Commander, is the "key man" in Royal Rangers.

The effectiveness of the Royal Ranger Outpost depends on this volunteer-

his understanding of Royal Rangers, on his enthusiasm and energy,
HIS TESTIMONY OF FAITH and on the quality of his efforts.

He shows the Outpost and the patrols the way ahead,
promotes leadership through the delegation of authority and
as each boy leader understands his role and acts,
the Outpost will thrive!

The Commanders job isn't easy! But it isn't impossible either...
especially if he has other assistants called Lt. Commanders, and
interested
Fathers of the Rangers... Mom's too!

To become a successful Commander does not require hours of
effort planning and sweating the details of organizing everything!

The Commanders job is to train his Outpost to develop boy leaders who
run THEIR outpost, NOT to run HIS OUTPOST.. Thier outpost....

*By placing the leadership where it belongs... with the Rangers you will
have
plenty of time to plan other events ahead, and the chance to do your
real job of
getting close to the heart and mind of each Ranger.

Further... you don't have to become an EXPERT! <G> Discovering skills
together
through the use of effective demonstrations in the meeting or at a camp
event is an
excellent way to learn, for both you and the Rangers!

A Commanders job is to help boys grow mentally, spiritually, physically
and socially
by encouraging them to learn for themselves, NOT instructing individual
boys in Ranger skills!

Be the Leader who *points the way....

Let the Boy Leaders have some fun!<G>

The boys want you there... so be there for them!
