Thanks Greg.. I have a few<G>

It's my opinion... energizeing the Patrols is the job of Sr.Guide and
his staff.

There job then begins when the Patrols see themselves as a important
group,
and they begin to work togather with their resources to compete or
succeed
at tasks assigned.

The biggest challenge a boy will face is just "takeing care of
himself"...

They need however to see each other, as the key to the welfare.. I
propose that
you set up camp-outs and use the cooking-cleaning and general
outdoorsmanship
required as the tools to build *patrol spirit and character....

I don't dis-restect a "point system" but patrol spirit is hard to build
indoors with full bellies from home. I have a picture of a camp hanging
in my office and under it is the slogan:

"In misery lies devotion"

I don't prescribe butal treatment, withholding resources ect. *BUT! I do
encourage you to hand over the key's to success to the boys... *like at
NTC and JLTC!

Fact one! Ranger Camping is hard work.. hard work is honorable, and thru
team's
and everybody being involved.. the walls we build will be brought
down... The JOB
of Commander is to watch..listen and learn when to "say something.. and
when not
to say something"

Teachable moments are better when they surround a practical issue.

*Uniforms are easy to promote when "Belonging" becomes important.
...what could your boys do... to encourage the desire to belong to the
****** Patrol?. Take them to a facility where uniforms are worn by
Police-Solidiers-Firemen ect.

*Advancement is easy when "Belief" is inspired in the boys so that they
want to
earn powderhorn to advance to bowie knife... ect. If they don't feel
that way..
what are Adults doing to discourage them?

Explain by useing stories how "Getting ahead" requires
effort-work-sacrifice
and the rewards are great to those who "Advance"... *sure it may seem
far-fetched to a boy that good grades equals respect... *But it does!

Grab that and use it!

Out in the dry dusty west.. water is scarce!

A long time ago... some folks were stranded and had to make there way on
foot
across the burning sands... for miles they walked... until they had no
more water in canteens. On the map they had.. was a location of a water
hole!

They pushed on... dreaming of water and ignoring the parched thirst that
gripped
them in the heat.. in time they came to the Oasis, only to find it DRY!

In a sand-blasted old wood box, was a water pump and a note:

"Howdy! This pump goes dry... and needs priming to get started..
if yah look behind you under the big rock.. you'll find a quart jar of
water..
There's just enough to prime... Good Luck Pilgrim.."

The pioneers turned and found a glass jar of clear cool.... water under
the rock as expected.... and the thought crossed their mind...

(*Hummm... I could trust the instruction or just drink the water...
*what if I waste it
on that dusty pump and don't get anything back!)

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
-----------------------------

Slowly the thirsty pilgrim poured the life giving water into the dry
well...

*chug..chug..creeeeek..gurgle...moan

He lifted the handle and let it fall..... until slowly from the deep
came
dirty rusty fluid!... pumping continued and soon the water cleared and
came out cool and pure! *Plenty for all and everything they could fill
was filled...

Last pump re-filled the jar... and it was replaced under the rock...
with a note: *It worked!

Subj: [RR] *4 missing points in Royal Rangers...

Since 1962 there have been 4 missing points in the "shadow" of our 4
GOLD
points- 4 ways a boy grows *mental *social *phyisical and *Spiritual!

Look on your emblem... see them?
They have stood the test of time, but have never been described...

The first missing point stands with *Mental and is: EXCELLENCE

"with God's help I will do my best" is not permission to fail or come in
second
place. What it truly means is that when you stand on the Earth's tallest
peak..
you will have done that with the help of your father in heaven.

Royal Rangers should not accept failure when the choice was open for
success.
A true Royal Ranger comes back to meet the challenge and succeed. Yes!
the
first time around is the best time to succeed... but if you stumble,
pick your self up,
change what needs to change and walk on! *You did your best...but try it
again!

In school... your duty is to get GOOD GRADES!
*good grades should be thought of as YOUR personal "paycheck" for the
job you work at..

*Our greatest wall in the way of success is our attitudes.. the
differences between
the common and the excellent are in the fine lines of "doing right" when
others are
stalled... Don't wait to be told what YOU KNOW IS RIGHT!

Be EXCELLENT without being told!

---------------------

The second missing point is the shadow of *social...and is: FRIENDLY!

A Royal Ranger who calls himself "Ready" is *ready and willing to extend
his hand to a
new boy... look him clear in the eye and welcome him to the Outpost! A
REAL
RANGER will go "out of his way" to talk with older people and look for
ways to be helpful.
He will be kind to animals and respect property of others.he cares about
the enviorment!
A REAL RANGER will be a "safe haven" to anyone in need of assistance and
help.
The skills he learns are to be USED! A REAL RANGER is an asset... a
positive
person who always is a welcome resource! A REAL RANGER is a FORCE FOR
GOOD!

A group of Rangers is a "POWERFULL FORCE FOR GOOD"

----------------

The third missing point shadows the Gold point of "physical" and is:
HEALTHY!

Being clean... might be ok<G> *But Real Rangers should be healthy!

Never do anything to destroy the potential that God may have in mind for
you!

Bad attitudes are just as dangerous, as drugs to your heart and soul..
allowing
seeds of anger to remain un-resolved... Being quick to "blow your top"
and
giving back always "more than you got" shows low character.

Character.. is doing right when no one see's you.

Our health is something we should guard... for it is in our hands that
much of the work
for good is accomplished. When we help others.. *That is true
christianity...
.and we are called to be READY!

Healthy in body.. in mind... and in *spirit!

Good attitudes flow from our Courage... they show our FAITH!
Good attitudes and kind words to everyone we meet will bend iron and
steel formed against us.. and when others fail and fall we will stand in
glory!

...*I said Jesus was coming back, and look at him shine!! Here I go!

--------------

In the "shadow of our gold spiritual point is: FAITH!

The steadfast love of the Lord never fails...
...his mercy shall endure..

In the last hours of this century... *I'm not so interested in best
camp,
hitting the bull, being there at the big camp-out... but more interested
in
seeing with my eyes something good happen...

I want boys to freely share that Royal Rangers was a positive experience
in their WHOLE LIFE!
...and I think these "missing points" are in fact .... right there<G>

Thanks...

Royal Rangers come in all shapes, sizes and personal make-up and abilities.
They are tall, short, thin and fat...clean and soiled, immature and
experianced, sharp and dull- timid and bold, athletic and uncoordinated
couch patato's!

*And then there are the boys! Heheeee! (*Mercy, forgive me please!<G>)

Boys are very different from one another, yet they have many common
traits. They cannot stand injustice, fovoritisum, sarcasum and
insincerity. Most of them crave action... and all desire "FUN!"

*They like to do things, but are impatient about how to do them.<g>

While boys want to be them selves, they hesitate to be different
because they prefere acceptence by the majority and beleve this acceptence
comes to them thru conformity.

This forms a great paradox, in that their are many differences in
individual boys and yet a great simularity in all boys!

As a leader of a Ranger Outpost, you should be concerned with both sides
of this paradox. You must work with the tools given by the great common
ground,of the desires of the boys, and yet reach out to *minister individualy
to
the real needs of boys...

You cannot however, be ALL things to all boys! You cannot take the place
of the greater church, the home, parents and the school. It is'nt our
function to solve their more complex problems. We should recognize them
tho, and point the way.. to steer the boy to those more able to help,
guide and council the boy as needed.. *and we can Pray!

To become effective with the boys, you need to really like them. This
can be shown by being interested in them and showing them respect..
in haveing patience with them and giveing encouragement and enthusiasum,
...and takeing time to *Listen!

Patience is shown by hear'n out a breathless adventure from a Pioneer,
when you have "more important things to do"....

It's holding back a quick word of criticizum, when you detect a failure
untill you can suggest a more positive way to make the situation right..

Patience also comes from "knowing" that boys learn a great deal from
failures, and trial and error... and sometimes you have to let go...

*WHAT DO THE BOY WANT FROM A "COMMANDER?"
-----------------------------------------
*TRY THESE ON TO SEE IF THE "SHOE FITS"

*Can you control or supervise without loseing your temper and spoiling the
"fun?"

*Can you disagree without being disagreeable?

*Do you have a sence of humor? Can you take a joke in a good natured way?

*Can the boys depend on your word, even in the smallest things?

*Are you fair?

*Do you respect them-accept them- even tho you hold a "higher standard"
for them to attain?

*Can you freely hand out praise without the use of the word: "But..."
(That's great, *BUT next time do better..)

*Do you really like Ranger boys?
How would the boys rate you if they could judge your leadership?

*It's of some comfort to know that Boys... are far more generious than men
in judgeing leadership. They know real quick how hard it is to lead.. and
appreciate your good work. *They may not allways say so.. but down inside,
you will allways live in their memories!

...and in our memories, to our hearts will allways be,
Royal Rangers sure to shine, all of the time!

*With God's help.. Do your best!

(My GOld Bar Training class text)
---------------------------------

Howdy Boys...

The class today is called "becoming a REAL LEADER"

First let me be clear..
The Flag here has "Royal Rangers" on a red border.

*I as a MAN cannot earn the GMA or the Pioneer Powder horn..
*I am mearly a Adult Leader of Royal Rangers...
*YOU then are a Royal Ranger!

and that means the program is yours boys..YOURS!

Royal Rangers is for the BOYS and when we talk about leadership *I mean to
talk about Royal Rangers and yes that's YOU.... The BOY LEADERS!

REAL LEADERS are *like Fathers!
==============================

They "Lead" with LOVE.

I pray every one of you boys today will become a Godly Christian MAN and a
Father! Think how you would change things and how you would act...
Matt: 7:12 states "Whatsoever you would have done unto you..do yee even so
unto them"

Commanders should act like Fathers!
Patrol Guides should act like Fathers!

To become a REAL LEADER ... Pray!
================================
Four points to consider!

1.King! *I should consider the Knights of the round Table, when leading my
Partol.. and that every one is a knight, with equal say in matters of the
rehlm and the PATROL!

2.WARRIOR! *I am to "stick-up" for the Patrol, the Outpost and the
Royal Ranger program. I am to defend the right of any boy in my partol to
fairly advance and enjoy his time as a ranger without fear of physical or
mental abuse.

3.Teacher/Mentor *I am to teach skills and help every ranger to advance as
well as advanceing myself! In leading by example... I should look for
someone to admire and do what they do, and when I find another looking to
me... I will be straight, and include him in my ranger experiences.

4. Friend! *I am to be a friend and a buddy to ALL in my patrol even those
I would not normaly reach out to... I am a Junior leader and have a job to
do! I need Spirit... Patrol Spirit!

The Royal Ranger Program
========================
Boys!
If your Outpost does not seem to be "doing" anything...

Don't wait for Commander to fix it...HE MAY BE THE PROBLEM!
Look at your handbook, become real familiar with what YOU EXPECT...
and ask questions!

Tell your Commander to RELAX and back-off!

*The GOld Bar Staff is alive and well and IN CONTROL!

Moral Backbone!
---------------

*Deep within each human being is a precious thing, possessed
by no other creature-the thing we call a conscience.

No one can tell you where it is located or what it looks like
but it is there *Big as life, just the same...

Occasionaly, in some people... it falls asleep.

*But in MOST PEOPLE it is like an inner voice that is very much
awake-sometimes it wispers to you...at other times it yells out loud!

Your conscious is what makes it possible for you... by yourself to decide
what is RIGHT ...and what is WRONG!
---------------------------------------------------(*

*Once upon a time,... there was an Indian who was named "Two dogs
fighting" A Pioneer visitor came to him and asked how he came to have
that name... the Indian replied: "Inside of all of us are 2 dogs who
compete.. Good and BAD ...they each can win, for they are very
powerful..."

The Pioneer was impressed and asked:"So how do you know which is winning?"

The Indian replied: "The dog that will win is the Dog I choose to feed..."

                    -----***--------

Your conscience speaks to you of yourself- of the moral obligation you
have to make your life count.

This very moment.... while you are still a boy, you must make decisions
that will shape the rest of your life.

The way you work in school, will set the pattern for your future. Failing
a subject, may close a door forever to an opportunity later in life and
lead to regret!

Your consience speaks to you about your relationship with other people-
respecting their rights, treating them justly and giveing them a fair
chance.

Your conscience tells you to obey the laws of our country, and to respect
the property of others....

*Your conscience, loves the Bible for in it is TRUTH! this truth never
changes and sets the mark in your life for justice, fairness and right
*Just as it has for many others before you.

Matt. 7-12 "The Golden rule"

"What so ever you would like done unto you.. do it even so unto others,
for this is the Law..."

LET YOUR CONSCIENCE BE YOUR GUIDE-

*KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT...
*DO WHAT IS RIGHT...

*Just back from an excellent experiance..

A Junior Leadership Camp

I have a re-newed understanding of several "hang-up's" in getting the
boys involved
in *program and advancement...It may "wrinkle yur feathers!"

Try this...

Sit two boys back to back in chairs.. make one an artist with a paper
and pencil and
clipboard to draw on.. He just draws what is described to him *No
questions! *No
looking around.. just draw.

Have the other boy describe a "graphic" of circles and lines without
looking at what the "artist" is drawing..

The result will be this!
---------------------

When we describe what we "see" time is needed to "translate" the vision
into the recievers own sence of "what they see"..... the result is that
the artist allways will draw something
shockingly different that what the "explainer" saw...the artist draws
what he "see's!"

Good Communication happenes when both parties understand and use their
reasoning to
translate or emithicize or understand exactly what it is that was
intended...

WE DON'T DO THAT WELL!

Many Commanders have trouble with their boys advancing in Royal
Rangers..

Adults stand and question the group, give a "pep talk" and wait... *if
silence is the
result... *if the boys respond with "I don't know Commander.." If the
boys seem to
"space out".....

You have a "Classic" problem with Communication..

Try This:
Begin group conversations with:

1. "Safe Harbor"- *explain in your own words, what Christ meant when he
said
that except we come as children... we should not see the kingdom of
God.. Tell them
you want them to feel important, that you have time to listen, and no
one has the right
to insult, mock the thoughts they will express in this outpost meeting.
Jesus "prefered"
that we all come to him as a child.. so the "Boys" are prime right-now!

*Like a shepherd guards the flock.. We should guard our fellowship...and
build trust.

2. *Being a good Leader- will inspire "followers"-

Is "living by the Ranger Code" a good rule for leaders to follow? Maybe
even
appointed leaders make mistakes.. how can we "follow" and enjoy
ourselves?
How can we learn from mistakes?

(*Forgiveness- *Mercy?)

How does wearing a complete uniform inspire confidence?
How does bringing your handbook and your thoughts, make the Outpost
better?
How can we allways be "Ready for anything?"

3. Reflection time-

When we all say something.. give time to the others to "echo back" what
was said..
asking thoughtful questions and noting shortcomings but progressing
forward to a goal or "mark"

Tool-

"WHAT-IF" each Ranger would stand before a "board" at each advancement
level
to back what he understood in his role in the Outpost? What if he was
praised for
successes and challenged in other areas to improve? What if "Leaders"
watched
close each of the Ranger boys and "reviewed" them one on one from time
to time?

What if we greeted each Ranger by "name" and smiled!

Would understanding improve? would advancement become real? would it
"shake
a tree" to harvest some fruit? *Would everyone involved begin to "know"
the heart
of each boy and leader so that we would grow in Love?

One over-rideing princeipal that we must build is allegience to the
GoldenRule of Matt:7:12

We've read it..memorized it..taught it.. *But we must impliment it in
our words and deeds
and in the hearts of the boys.. for fundimental fair play, is at the
core of fellowship.

Do you desire to be yelled at?
Do you want to be singled out for ridicule?
Do you want to be ignored?
Do you want to be hit-cheated-lied too?

NO!

I want respect..
I want to be rewarded for my efforts..
I want to belong.. to "something alive"

*fROM DEEP hOLIDAY ROUTINE WITH no spellcheck!<g>

This may be part of the great changes comming..

Rangers has allways selected Patrol leaders and have never assigned
responsibilities to them.
We have allways run the outpost as one group with the Commander as
leader.. Dicipline administrater and advancement sign-off dude.

I call this form of management "Leader-Led" as opposed to "Boy Led"

The yeild from this is that all "boy" jobs lack respect by the back row
Rangers.. and they are who we need to "enguage"..

My plan is thus.. based on NTC Training..

Make Sr.Guide do the job we think of as "Commander"...

I saw adults should be silent and invisible in the weekly meetings
promoteing good beahvior of course.. and doing the jobs of councilor.

Yes adlults drive and have money<G>

*But planning where to go, what to do when you get there and what to eat
and how to cook ect. are all valuible "teachible moments" that Rangers has
overlooked as we attempt to get them to that council fire for a salvation
message.

How much better the "sermon" will be after knowing you as a boy... have
made your camp the best you can and earned the respect that comes with
being a real part of a group- a Patrol!

Bravo for the Patrol system..

My future involvement in Royal Rangers is tied to makeing this happen.

*Use the Lt's as "Patrol advisors" they should NOT put a hand to anything
a boy can do...

(*Secret principal- Boys sometimes are trained to be weak.. to fake
illness or to fear work. Put the shovel in his hand tell him how heroic it
is for him to dig,.assign other boys to dig with him and suddenly he will

> Number of Commanders per age group?
> Reading in my Ranger Manual, I observe that each age group of boys is to
have a Commander and another Lieutenant Commander for every ten boys.
> I am to read into this that a Lieutenant Commander is for every two patrols
since a patrol is five to eight boys, or should Lieutenant Commanders be used
as Patrol Advisors and that the number ten is not correct?
