"ole Burn'n Heart" was on the Nimitz.. and I've
I'm sure it is somewhat like the Enterprise CVA65
with much assortment of eat'n places ect.
The smallest "ship" I served aboard was a mine
sweeper named USS Constant. There we ate "family"
style at one large hoeseshoe shaped dineing table
that also served as lounge.
The next ship I was on.. was a Distroyer Tin can
that had a mess deck about the size of the Cdr.
Johnnie lodges kitchen. Bigger.. mayby better.
*Hard to say.. as I was in the Smoke'n Navy!
The ship I went to Wespac on was the USS Mars AFS-1
and it was a medium size combat re-supply ship that
had 300+ sailors. We had one chowline and a
dozen tables seating 6 or so at chairs. You passed
in the line with a stainless steel tray, and the
messcooks slopped (*served) food anywhere they could
on yur tray. *Lot's of gravy over bread, and 40
versions of hamburger meat disguised as something
it wasn't.. (*Salsbury steak ect.)
Pie went in the middle atop the smashed
potato's<G>
Wed's night was "ethnic" night where you had a
chance of the Hamburger showing up in chinese food or
mexican style... Chow was served at periods spanning
two watch stations.. so you had a chance to run
off watch for chow or run to chow before standing
your "watch" (*Duty)...
The only other thang availible was one "Coke" machine
and a snack shack that we called the "Geedunk". Every
thing there was known as "Po-gee-bait" and included
candy bars and soda pop, nuts and pretzels.
Underway, and overseas some would buy "geedunk"
on Liberty and stow it for re-sale at "sea prices"
that you may assume is higher than what they paid<G>
A "form" of credit was availible if you were broke,
at the rate of 2 for 1. This ment that a loan of $10
would be repaid at $20 on payday next.. or it would
double again to $40! *You could however.. "roll
the bones" and gamble at re-payment on a double or
nothing understanding where the $40 would be Zero
or turn into $80!
TRADITIONS!
The Navy!
