About the Navy<G>
"Let those with an ear, now hear this"<G>
While the Military is mostly thought of as
a chain of command and duty requireing a
smart salute and crisp uniform, Much of the
life of a US Navy seaman is spent in wrinkled
work dungress and splattered with paint, grease
and whatever spilled out the overflow pipe<G>
The work of the ship was divided into "Rates"
that is equilivalant to civilian "trades" and
in these jobs you advanced as an individual,
based on testing, skills and practical factors.
Shipboard duties for exterior maintence was called
"Deck division" while the care of machinery, engines
and equipment was the domain of "Enginering" or
as we said "Snipes"
Rarely, were we asked to salute, march or be
addressed in anyway other than that of a civilian
worker in a factory. The close quarters of liveing
led to a lack of privicy, so it was common to
chat as equals while working.
In most cases, Leadership was handled much as
it is on the civilian job. Command authority
exsisted.. as well as the framework for dicipline
and writen orders.. But in the practical it was
the relationship of friends that generated the
functioning of the groups. When needed you "turned-
too" and help your buddy.
