*At the risk of getting slamed for explaining a Scout tradition..
The founder of Scouts designed that program for British boys who
began to "play scout" from a field manual Baden Powell had made
for the army. Upon retirement, he re-designed it to fit the play
of boys for a purpose.
When publisher W.D.Boyce was lost in the London fog in 1909 a
boy in uniform came to assist him with directions. He was offered
a tip, and refused saying: No thank you sir.. "I'm a Scout and
have sworn to be helpfull without compensation"
Mr Boyce was so impressed, that he followed throught to contact
Baden Powell and the result was that Scouting came to America.
Royal Ranger Tradition has such treasures, and in every way is
as compelling as story. We just have never told of the trip that
Cdr.Will Thorne made to the USA in the 1960's or the journey made
by Cdr.Johnnie to Austrialia in 1966. We haven't published much
about an American airman who started Royal Rangers in Britian or
the circumstances that brought the Ranger adventure to Mayasia or
Germany.
The simple fact is that we as Royal Rangers have not taken care of our
heritage in a way that promotes a world wide "brotherhood". I beleve
we continue to struggle over the concept of ministry vs program to the
detriment of careing for our common history, and bond made by the
wearing of the Royal Ranger emblem.
Every American Scout wears a small US flag on the sleave as well as
a purple emblem to show membership in: "The International Brotherhood
of Scouting".
Scouts beleve that they have many friends around the World who share the
core values of themselves, while preserveing the unique national
distinction and differences of program, policy and awards.
Could it be that Royal Rangers have come to a time where we might lift
our eyes above our local view to embrace fellow Rangers in kind?
