Thanks for the steps, Bill.  But before I tell my client to try this,
the local printer DOES print.  You can print Word documents, you can print
RBase reports.  What you CANNOT print is a file loaded up in Notepad, a file
loaded up in RCode, 'type'ing a file from the r> prompt...

Try troubleshooting the local printer first. Open the printer dialog (start,settings,printer,properties).
 
If the printer has a diagnostis menu, this is the first thing I would look at. Very often printer diagnostics can point to the problem.
 
Print a test page and if it doesn't  print, check the cable connections and retry.
 
Make sure the printer properties don't show the printer taken off-line or paused.
 

I would then replace the parallel cable and see if it will print.
 
Usually when a local printer won't print the solution is usually pretty easy to find as it is most likely a hardware related issue.
