Jim is right. Some (probably most) of the readers have a setup card that
you can program all sorts of stuff into - tabs, returns, etc.  Another
method is building some of these into your bar code.  There is an
"extended" ascii character set for Code 39 that allows for asterisks, pound
signs, carets, etc.  I don't think the Code 39 font that comes with R:base
has these exensions.  I'll have to put this in as an enhancement request
for future versions.

Some of the bar code readers I have looked at work like what I think others
on
this list call a wedge system. It is plugged in-line with the keyboard and
basically will send information to any application as if it was entered
from the keyboard. I would hope you system does the same. I would not like
to have to go read a file or some other method. I have even seen some that
will send a Return / or Tab key after the data entered so we could then
fire
off an eep to continue processing and so on. This is really cool. One of
the
other pieces of hardware I have a need for is one of those signature
capture
devices .. will get to that someday.
