Keep in mind that there might be situations where you don't
scan things one at a time, or they aren't near a computer.
I have a system that's been in place for about 7 years at
a client where they take a VIDEX TimeWand reader back into
the storage area, scan a whole bunch of items (can hold
thousands of scans), bring the scanner back to a docking
station and it creates an ascii delimited file with the date
and time scanned that my RBase program reads.

Some of the bar code readers I have looked at work like what I think others on
this list call a wedge system. It is plugged in-line with the keyboard and
basically will send information to any application as if it was entered
from the keyboard. I would hope you system does the same. I would not like
to have to go read a file or some other method. I have even seen some that
will send a Return / or Tab key after the data entered so we could then fire
off an eep to continue processing and so on. This is really cool. One of the
other pieces of hardware I have a need for is one of those signature capture
devices .. will get to that someday.
