Thanks Bruce! I ordered the new laptop, so will check out one of your
suggestions to get saved email and some data files off her dead old Compaq -
sounds like it might not be too expensive (I hope). I will be sure and tell
them she uses Outlook Express (old and new computer as it's so much more
user-friendly than Outlook).
I'm looking at EBay now to buy the Office XP Pro 2002 version (best working
version to date without problems I've learned and works great for me). Odd
that sellers are selling "used" Office XP Pro 2002 - I thought if it was
used once, the verification code could not be used again. Then found other
sellers selling oem saying something about sending hardware per
requirements....even more strange. I just purchased Office XP Pro 2002 in
January for our computers, so really sorry I can't just use that on hers.
I'm going to take Emmitt's suggestion and install Viper on her machine- will
be great to see how that one works before I remove the 5+ programs I have on
my computer that do the same thing - THANKS EMMITT.
That leaves clean-up/maintenance programs. I've been using Tune-Up and
Privacy Control - seem to clean up well and just needed to adjust PC so it
doesn't delete all passwords.
Anyway, I'm feeling less stressed about the whole thing - THANK YOU to all
who have helped me with this.
Cathy

Cathy:
1) I agree with the laptop replacement recommendation.
2) Data retrieval. This is not guru-level work. Geek Squad, Fryes, etc.
should have people good enough.
3) Laptop hard drive. Laptop hard drives are designed for easy removal.
An adapter found in any competent service shop connects it to the
service computer as a secondary drive. Unless the data is encrypted at
the OS level, it can be easily accessed and either transferred to a
thumb drive, burned to CD or ported over to a new machine.
4) Be sure that the service person knows the name of the email program
which created the data. Importing that data into the new program is the
last hurdle. Also have passwords and provider info at hand if you can.
Cheers

I hope it is ok that I ask a non-RBase question. If not allowed, please
disregard.
My 87 year old Mother's Compaq laptop (Presario R3000) just died.
Sometimes will start up into Windows, but then immediately shuts itself
down before I can do anything (AC power connected). Tried starting with
battery alone - nothing. Tried starting in Safe Mode, went through some
steps then shut down.
Checking on the net, I've found this to be a frequent problem with
Compaq laptops going back to 2005 and continuing - hundreds of postings
with this problem, which is really annoying that they could continue to
sell defective machines. Most of the ones who said they fixed it said it
was a heat sink problem, which seemed to fix it when they replaced - but
others said motherboard problem.
I'm hardware illiterate, so have to depend upon a repair
person/company I am hoping someone out there can recommend a company that
is honest, competent, and hopefully not too expensive. I am in Huntington
Beach, California, and we have Computer Geeks, Geek Squad and Frye's
locally. Have read good and bad reviews of each. If anyone can recommend
one of these (or anyone else in the area), I would really appreciate it.
Thank you.
