Wires near fluorescents will in fact pick up induced current. I once had an
installation on coax where the Novell server was acting strangely. I
removed the coax from the back of the server and got a jolt. I measured the
voltage between the coax shielding and the frame of the server at 48 volts.
It turned out that about 50' of cable was coiled above the ceiling and
laying on a fluorescent fixture.

I wouldn't expect that just running a cat5 near a fixture would be
problematic, but it is still best to avoid the possibility where you can.

Hi

I have heard you should have your Cat5 cables 4ft away from fluorescent
lights

but the electrician wiring my new office says it is not necessary.

Is there any info from major companies that I can give him or am I being
overly concerned?

Thanks

Marc
