I looked briefly at mySql and think it's a very viable DB product, but 
it clearly lacks the "fit and finish" of Rbase in addition to it's many 
features.

But if you must use it and miss views and sub-selects, I don't see 
why a person couldn't just substitute multi-table selects.

Sel tbl1_col from tbl1 whe ID in (sel ID from table2)
would become
Sel tbl1_col from tbl1 t1, tbl2 t2 whe t1.ID = t2.ID

As we've heard before, views are nothing more than stored selects. 
If you had to, even view definitions that I use that are pages long 
could be repeated each time a data set is required (Although I'm 
not sure what you'ld do to replace cascading views).  But I think a 
few hundred dollars to avoid the struggle and get the added 
features is $$ well spent.
