There is a different way of getting connection over a WAN link, and that is
to use something like Terminal Services of Citrix.  We use an RBase
database on a novell server.  We have a Citrix server over which we can
access this application (as well as other stuff) over the wan.  Works fine,
and I don't need to worry about any person's workstation being left up. 
Also, it means that I can have one server, which need not be all that
powerful, for a fluctuating number of simultaneous users without having to
allocate the highest number of workstations for this purpose.
