There's not much to get. I'm not suggesting the race ruins the route. I'm saying that I'd rather ride that route in a way that lets me enjoy how beautiful it is. I'll bet you a bag of Sil's that not many of those people (particularly the ones near the podium spots) really enjoyed that ride. Sure, they'll brag about how epic it was, but I've done enough racing and riding with racers to know that there was a whole lot of suffering going on. I'm starting to feel the same way about randonneuring - why take something you love and turn it into something you loathe?
