Each to his own, of course. I personally would prefer a lightish road bike
with 28s (or perhaps 32s) for mild dirt and gravel than a 42mm plus
heavyweight, which leads to my question: at what point, all else being equal
of course, does weight difference matter? I expect 8 or 10 lbs will make a
difference, especially if a few lbs are in the wheels, at least for climbing
and accelerating generally. But 5 lbs? 2 lbs?

I know that my speedos read a bit faster, consistently, on my two Rivs than
on the Motobecane; the M actually has the lighter frame and fork, but with
the various parts and, especially, the beefy wheels, weighs, overall,
noticeably more.

Now I don't know if it is the lighter weight per se that makes me faster
(ie, faster by the speedos) on the Rivs; perhaps the Rivs are more
comfortable, or more efficient in one way or another, or I like them better
or what have you, but I *expect* it is the weight, especially the wheel
weight, that makes them (per the speedos, again) faster.

As for the type of riding one does, I personally prefer shorter, more
enthusiastic rides; 35 miles or less and mostly less since they tend mostly
to be errand and commuting miles; and a pace that makes me breath hard, and
sweat even in quite cold weather. But that's just my preference, and while I
claim it does exploit, so to speak, a possibility of the bicycle that 12 mph
60 milers don't, it doesn't exploit all or the "better" possibilities of the
bicycle. IOW, the "gofast" type of bike has its rights, as does the
"Country" bike.
