I think touring and cyclocross bikes are the most popular for the
TransIowa - after all, it's at least 2/3 gravel roads, and you don't
want to ride 200 miles of gravel on 23mm tires. A local rider i know
(and list member, i believe) Ken is the only one to ever finish the
TransIowa on a fixed gear bike - it was his Quickbeam, set up pretty
much identically to how he commuted on it every day. I think he's be
the first to argue that in that case the Quickbeam was very close to
the ideal tool for the job.

I've ridden my Redwood on fast club training rides, and i can pretty
confidently say that it wasn't the bike's fault if i couldn't keep up.
