With the SRAM quick links, I just use a regular pair of pliers on an  
angle to slide the pins towards each other.  Takes about 5 seconds or  
so once I find the link.  What happens is the buildup of grit and  
such makes it hard to slide the pins in the slots.

I never take the chain off except to replace it so it's no big deal  
to me that this is a bit of a pain.  I know people who take chains  
off for cleaning, and people who use wax would need to do this  
periodically to rewax; this sort of thing may bug them more.
