Well, after having broken many chains over many years with many different kinds of chain tools (my first one: a large nut -- the kind that goes on a bolt, a nail, and a hammer), I find that the advantage of master links is that they are simpler, faster, easier, as long as grit isn't blocking the link and you are using the right technique. I open my masterlinks, generally Sram but I've used Connex, in literally less than five seconds. So, the advantages are, severally, speed, ease, and simplicity.
