Why not try some of the better designed and constructed nylon or whatever cages? I've got four on my Fargo made of heavy, tough, thick black plastic and designed with an interrupted ring to grab the bottle. They don't drop bottles even at 30 mph on terrible washboard, and no straps needed.
FWIW: I broke 2 of the very pretty Nitto "Butterfly" cages carrying large double-walled bottles (32 oz, IIRC). The brazing was just not up to the weight and stress. The Irises that replaced them (this on my road bikes) haven't broken yet; they are not as shiny -- or as expensive -- but, IMO, are the better cages.
