I have White square tapers on 2 bikes and they have been problem free. I
built those bikes from bare frame so I spent $$ for the White cranks. If I
was converting an existing bike to ss, I'd use the existing crank, maybe
with a narrower spindle and possibly add a wide/narrow chainring. In my
experience, cranks are pretty low maintenance (except for the occasional
annoying creak), and pretty durable. I've seen broken cranks, but I've
never broken one. I've used square taper, and various external bearing
cranks, and I don't think I can tell a difference in terms of getting power
to the wheel.
