Rachel, I did this (it's the century one? or another one?) on my Orange Cheviot and had a total blast, it's so much fun and yes, somewhat utopic.
Maybe you've already done it, if so ignore my pitch! But, true, there is bike traffic. That's kind of the point, and as long as you aren't planning to race through, it's fun to be part of it. Such an amazing city, or collection of cities, and so fun to see on a bike, even for someone who lives here. Also, I'm guessing since Marc did it in the 90s bike culture has improved 80002% .... there are now bike lanes everywhere, and with CitiBike everyone who is inclined to bike has some practice. ITS FUN! I wish my parents had brought me to the city on bike, you're so cool.
