Ryan: Thanks for this clear and precise description of your perceptions of the 3 bikes. Your comments make me move the Malocchio up on the “just maybe” list a few notches. I’ll go back and read about it some more.
Long and low: I was thinking about such a position on the way back home from my (exquisitely pleasant) ride with Chris up the Tramway hills this morning. The usual headwind sprang up — a brisk Southerly, this time — as I rode South homeward. I’ve noticed that if I take the trouble to warm up, I not only can pedal more energetically with less feeling of fatigue, but I “become” more flexible, and I remarked the low riding position, hands on hoods, elbows at 90*, shoved back in the saddle, as I torqued up a small hill into the wind; the position seemed very “natural.” — That said, I have resolved, should I ever get a derailleur road bike, to set up the cockpit like that of the Matthews dirt road road bike: bar just about even with saddle instead of 3-4 cm below, but on 10 cm stem instead of 8 cm. Will go back to the Malocchio but keep the Roadeo near the top of the list. Aside: the #2 Matthews IGH fixed road bike is made from relatively thinwall (.8 .4 .8; I told him *not* to use thinner) tubing, at least in places; don’t have full details; but normal gauge and not OS. The 42 mm EL Naches Passes do seem to slow it down slightly compared to the ineffably wonderful 28 mm 175 gram Elk Passes, but the bike does seem to “plane” compared to the porky 2003 Curt that it replaced. — Not that the Curt was horrible, but that over 17 years, or perhaps just over the 13 years after it was converted to a fixed gear, it just seemed not to be 100% willing to turn my pedaling efforts into forward motion.
