I was wondering the same thing. A M105 self propelled howitzer is an artillery piece. It wouldn't do well as a tank due to next to nothing armor.
Hmm ... what if self propelled artillery pieces had to be stopped (not moving) to fire? While moving, they can be taken out just like a tank and cannot fire. While stopped, they have artillery men deployed and can fire at other assets. That might be a good compromise between self propelled and artillery.
