oh and rather than fussing with metal bands (though they would be stronger) what about a coat or two of light weight fiberglass cloth and resin? this way you can cover all the sides of the connecting links. or after you drilled them for the screws, maybe drop them into a container of Urethane overnight to soak in for deep penetration and then remove them to dry.
