I have been thinking about making a tank for a long time now, but I do
not know what I need. It is mostly the RC components that I do not
know what is needed, and I do not know where to get them. Also, I do
not know where to get detailed specs and dimensions on tanks. If
someone can help me get the gist of how to do it, what parts are
needed and where to look for them, that would be great. I think the
biggest problem for me is where to get all the parts.

A main question of mine is what size of an electric motor would be
needed? I was thinking about getting a smaller scale RC model and just
tearing it apart and rebuilding it into a wooden hull, but then that
still leaves the turret turning and firing system, and I think doing
that would make it under powered. Would it be possible to just use the
RC components from the smaller RC and just have them connect to a
relay instead of the small components inside the tank and have 2
separate batteries?

The 1/16 scale tanks that I seen shoot air soft BB’s. If I get one of
them and do the relay design, is that a good idea for a beginner, and
is it safe? The 1/16 model only turns 320 degrees, so I would need to
still figure out the turret, because I don't know how the turrets
work, how do they spin around without breaking and twisting anything
and how does everything fit into it. I was thinking about lazy susans,
but that still leaves all the equipment and such. Airbag clock
springs from an automobile steering column would work, I think, but
those can still break if you turn around to many times, so if anyone
knows anything that is better, please let me know .

Treads are another thing I kind of need help with. I get how they work
and all, but which ones work and look the best, and where to get
them? Should I try to make them, or buy some, like Vex treads (http://
www.vexrobotics.com/276-2168.html)? And how easy is it to make the
road wheels and drive wheels, or am I better off buying them? I don't
know the size and such of real tank treads, so I do not know what to
do here.

I would really like to build a Panzer III Ausf. N, but was also
wondering about the rules on defensive ratings though, since it has 50
mm armor + 20 mm plates. Would that count as 70mm, or the 50mm or a
combination of both depending on where it is hit?
