I did think of a magnet, but I'd have to make the cap quite a  bit
bigger, it's currently just under 1mm clear of the fixing nut, I  also
don't think even a strong magnet would hold it on against  paintball
hits or bashing scrub.
There will be an aluminium washer that  will get bent up to lock the
nut when installed, so I doubt that after I  fix the caps I'll need to
do any maintenance, and if I have to, it'll still  work just fine
without the cap! Losing a cap or two won't stop me getting  into
battle.

well, maybe not those exactly, but the same type. i have some of them, and  
they are super strong unlike your craft store refrigerator  magnets
