This sort of interview is a problem. Delphi was not terminated, is not
yet dead, and might be spun-off from Borland. Nobody knows the exact
path Borland will follow -- though the newsgroups are busy with chat
that employees and PK himself might purchase the IDE line.
Geoff should be careful before saying a competing product is "terminated."
Yes, Delphi is on the ropes... but not because it isn't making money.
I've read the numbers and it is still a solid product. The problem is
that attracting new users has flatlined, so the only profits are from
upgrades. Borland wants to be a middleware and management company. I
can't blame them for thinking VB/C# has won the battle in corporate IT
departments.
Delphi was never pushed as a tool for everyone. It should have been, but
instead they tried to compete head-to-head with MS for over 20 years.
I bet if they went on a subscription basis... *j/k*
Seriously, I doubt many Delphi programmers would be impressed with RB. I
know using RB just reminds me of how much I miss Delphi since switching
to the Mac. Still, RB works well enough.
No matter what, I'm saddened to see Delphi, the Pascal "soul" of
Borland, being sold or spun-off. Things change, though. IBM's soul was
the punch card reader for a long time. :P
Just asking that Real Software be more careful when referring to another
tool. "I'm not dead yet!"
