The use case that forums do not address is: "I want to see all the questions that people are asking, and occasionally respond to those that I can help with." The introduction of forums has made that behavior prohibitively expensive in terms of time and effort. The NUG has gone sharply downhill since the forums were introduced. It's hard to imagine RS killing the forums now that they are there.
