I believe, IIRC from my modem days, that there is a command you can
send to the modem to turn that behavior off. I think it's called
local echo.
There is exactly such a feature and it can be enabled and disabled
with the "standard" Hayes AT command
ATE0 - Echo Disabled
ATE1 - Echo Enabled
