Files that you grab from the Web have NO MacType, files from your digital camera have NO MacType

Often they DO have a MacType. It all depends on how the file was acquired or transferred and whether that tool did a good job of creating a proper Mac file.

A known JPEG file should absolutely have its MacType set to JPEG no matter where it came from.

Half the engineers came from Next and some of them still haven't figured out the beauty of "the Mac way" yet. ;-)
