* REAL SQL Server is licensed on a "per server" basis. Prices
start at
$500 and include one year of updates.

Whilst I don't think this is outlandish, it does propose some
difficulties for smaller apps. Say I produce a real (no pun
intended) slick contact manager with the built in db. It sells for
$29.95. Small businesses might buy it but as soon as they want to
add just one more user the price jumps to $559.90. That's a fair leap.
In defense of REALsoftware, switching from a Filemaker Runtime
Solution (single user) to Filemaker Server Advanced will also set you
back $499 + ? times a Filemaker Client license at $299, which is at
least a leap of ±$1100 (Filemaker Server + at least 2 clients as you
want to go multi-user).
I'm placing the RealSQL server in this segment of the market, I
wouldn't compare it to a true multi-user database like MySQL,
OpenBase, … for that matter. Placing a queueing system (and maybe
prioritizing rules for queries) and some transaction support over a
single user database doesn't make it an enterprise-scalable database
(I'm oversimplifying, I know), and it shouldn't either considering
the target audience.
It's nice to see REALsoftware investing time and money in decent
multi-user database support for REALbasic, as they've been neglecting
it for quite a while now (buggy plug-ins, no plug-in updates, …). I
honestly believe they should thank people like Ruslan and Lynn and
Aliacta/OpenBase/FrontBase/… for keeping database developers with
REALbasic, because I'm sure a lot of them would have given up if
these other working solutions weren't available.
Now let's hope that new MySQL beta plug-in is finalized soon and they
dare not charge for it if you have a pro version :-)
Best regards
Peter De Berdt
