In defense of REALsoftware, switching from a Filemaker Runtime
Solution (single user) to Filemaker Server Advanced will also set
you back $499 + ? times a Filemaker Client license at $299, which
is at least a leap of ±$1100 (Filemaker Server + at least 2
clients as you want to go multi-user).

Does the standard FMP not allow peer to peer sharing anymore? (I
haven't actively developed FMP since 5.5)
I wouldn't know, I made it to FMP version 6 and couldn't really care
about the versions that came afterwards :-)
But seriously, using the standard FMP Client for serving up a major
solution was unworkable (sllllllllooooooooowwwwwwwwww) for both the
host and the client and it would still set you back 2 x $299 (2
Filemaker Clients). The good days when you could connect with a
Runtime version to a server is long gone (FMP version 4).
I do have the same concerns about the RealSQL database as I have with
Filemaker: you're using a legacy protocol, so what if you decide
REALbasic just doesn't cut it for you anymore, or you need to access
it from PHP, Ruby on Rails, ... You're tied to this one development
platform and are at the mercy of a commercial company that may decide
to change pricing at any time. I feel sorry for all those people
being forced to upgrade all their Filemaker Clients again just for
universal binary support.
Best regards
